Browns Coordinators Letting Pettine Down

Mike Pettine is being let down by his staff (AP Photo).

When you’re an NFL head coach with no prior experience other than being a coordinator for a few years, the most important thing you can do is hire an experienced, reliable staff.

You need a really good staff to guide you through problems in the locker room, on the practice field, and when it comes to scheme. You can’t be all things to all people and you can’t be in every position room at once. At the end of the day, your 53-man roster isn’t going to ultimately respond to your coaching. They’re responding to your staff’s coaching.

10 Thoughts – Browns vs. Raiders

Ten thoughts on the debacle home loss to the Oakland Raiders on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium:

1.) At one point in his post-game press conference, Mike Pettine said, “I told our staff, at times we looked like a scout team.” He said it almost to deflect the blame to his staff. But at the end of the day, Pettine is responsible for the product on the field. The only one to blame for the Browns looking like a “scout team” against the NFL’s perennial scout team in the Oakland Raiders is Mike Pettine. Plain and simple.

By Playing Not to Lose, Pettine is Losing a Weary Fanbase

By Adam Bennett, @HFSCleveland

Since their return to the NFL in 1999, the Browns have always taken the safe route. Conservative roster choices and even more conservative playcalling have led to a “Play Not To Lose” mentality that supersedes – and may even accurately define – the “Play Like A Brown” mantra that Mike Pettine and Ray Farmer have adopted in their time here.

It’s Johnny’s Time

By Adam Bennett, @HFSCleveland

For the good of the franchise in the short AND the long term, it’s time to give Johnny Manziel the keys to the offense for the rest of the season.

That statement isn’t an indictment of Josh McCown. McCown looked good before he went down with a concussion that has sidelined him since the first series of the season opener. There’s just simply more at play here.

The Hard Foul Pick ‘Em: Week 2

– The Hard Foul Staff

Week 1 is in the books, and the Hard Foul Staff looked like this with their predictions:

Brian Wolf led the way with 13 correctly picked winners.

Angela Nicholas, Evan Sally, Matt Haring, and Steve Stich had 11 correctly picked winners.

Scott Goodwin and Cruz Serrano knotted 10 winners a piece.

Rounding out the group was Jim Bearor, Zack El-Sharif, and Mike Tolsma with 8 winners.

This week, the gang does this one a little different. This is the style we intend to use the rest of the way. The staff decided on 4 big games and will be picking those, with the inclusion of Adam Bennett (HFSCleveland) as well.

The games this week we have decided to pick are: New England at Buffalo, Seattle at Green Bay, San Diego at Cincinnati, and Dallas at Philadelphia. Who do you have in this week’s Big 4? Continue reading

Any Browns fan knows the organization has been one of the worst, if not THE worst, when it comes to executing on the field. Most fans also know the team is one of the worst when it comes to executing in the draft.

The widespread perception is the Browns are being held back on the field because the organization’s various general managers and personnel people are performing poorly off the field. Today, we provide some light to that perception with statistics.
