First Loaded Weekend in College Hoops

First loaded Saturday of hoops is here!

There are always games. That is one of the best parts about the college basketball season, and sometimes we take that for granted. With the college football season now officially in bowl season, that means more free time on Saturday to watch college hoops. While we all enjoy a Monday night double header, nothing quite beats a full day of action on the hardwood. Sleep in a little bit, turn on GameDay, and then watch college hoops for twelve straight hours on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, CBS, the SEC network, the YES network. This is one of those Saturdays!

December 19th is the first really good hoops Saturday of the 2015-16 season. We have two quality neutral court doubleheaders, a top 10ish match up in Virginia, and at least 10 watchable fixtures to get you through 12 hours of the day. Now that college football takes a back seat and final exams should be wrapped up, it is time for some college hoops!

Bills/Dolphins Quick Hitters

Sunday was a must win game for the Bills, and they handled their business. This win was sparked by the return of a couple of starters who missed the last game versus the Jaguars. Tyrod Taylor, Sammy Watkins, and Karlos Williams all played a huge role in getting the Bills back to .500.

The Return of a Legend: Miller Back in Buffalo

Attention has focused directly on Ryan Miller for this weekend’s matchup against the Vancouver Canucks. There will be intense emotions streaming throughout the First Niagara Center as fans, players, coaches and other staff members reflect on the 11 seasons that the Michigan native spent in between the pipes for the Buffalo Sabres.

It will be a different situation for Miller when he skates onto the ice wearing blue, white and green. I know, that sounded pretty good up until the green was mentioned. Miller was traded to the St. Louis Blues on a night that went from routine to hectic. It became a scramble to find an additional goaltender when it was announced that a trade had been made a mere half hour before puck drop. Steve Ott and Ryan Miller were exchanged for Jaroslav Halak and Chris Stewart on March 1, 2014.

For The Mets, The Future Is Now

November 1st, 2015. Mark that day down, as the New York Mets were still playing baseball. If I have said it once, I have probably said it 1,000 times – if you were to tell me the Mets would be playing baseball in November I would have laughed at you (probably hysterically). Who knew one trade (Cespedes), and a few young, blossoming stars (Syndergaard, D’Arnoud) would pave the way for a run all the way to the baseball seasons winding days. Terry Collin’s took the blame for Sunday nights 9th inning meltdown, and let’s face it – he was out-managed all series long by Ned Yost, of all people. But Yost pushed the right buttons for his side while New York and Terry Collins’ club just didn’t have the answers for the Royals pressure.

College Football Review: Week 4

We are a month into the season and five weeks away from the first College Football Playoff ranking. It’s a good thing because as of right now there are many teams that believe they are a top four team. We witnessed many top tier programs handling their business against lesser opponents while schools such as TCU were taken to the brink and barely survived. We got to watch a Heisman hopeful widen the gap from his opponents and we got to see Karl Malone still use a flip phone.

The current top two schools in the country, Ohio State and Michigan State took care of business with 38-12 and 30-10 victories. The Big Ten is definitely representing themselves well right now. TCU and Trevone Boykin escaped a close one against in state rival Texas Tech on a fourth down tipped reception for the game winning touchdown with under 30 seconds remaining. UCLA went on the road to take on Arizona and took care of business with a 56-30 victory. Number 17 Northwestern remained undefeated after a 24-19 victory over Ball State and number 18 Utah put a whooping on number 13 Oregon. Are we witnessing the fall of the Ducks?

Eichel Shines In Opening Preseason Game

I couldn’t help but have a smile on my face as the “Sabre Dance” played on WGR Sport Radio on Monday evening. The Sabres were finally back in action on a fresh sheet of ice at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Sabres trumped the Wild by a score of 3 – 2 despite the several prominent forwards missing from Buffalo’s lineup. Fans listening via radio or receiving updates must have been displeased by the fact that this preseason game went untelevised.

It’s a rare realization, preseason is now interesting this year, there are so many new things to analyze about this team. The theme of the preseason opener was music to any Buffalo fan’s ears. Continue reading →

The Hard Foul Pick ‘Em: Week 2

Week 1 is in the books, and the Hard Foul Staff looked like this with their predictions:

Brian Wolf led the way with 13 correctly picked winners.

Angela Nicholas, Evan Sally, Matt Haring, and Steve Stich had 11 correctly picked winners.

Scott Goodwin and Cruz Serrano knotted 10 winners a piece.

Rounding out the group was Jim Bearor, Zack El-Sharif, and Mike Tolsma with 8 winners.

This week, the gang does this one a little different. This is the style we intend to use the rest of the way. The staff decided on 4 big games and will be picking those, with the inclusion of Adam Bennett (HFSCleveland) as well.

Week 1: Bills vs Colts

It was an absolutely electric atmosphere on Sunday for the Bills home opener, and the team certainly appeared to feed off of that energy. The Indianapolis Colts walked directly into a buzz saw, getting outplayed badly in all three facets of the game. It was a fantastic team effort overall that showed the league the potential that this Bills team has to make this year. I’ll take a look at the best and worst aspects of the Bills performance week one.

The “Same Old Browns” Are Building It Wrong

The concept, in and of itself, isn’t bad. Build from the lines out. Shore up the middle of your offense and defense, and supplement talent in the trenches with reliable players outside.

On Sunday afternoon, against the 4-12 Jets, coming off a 7-9 season, the “Play Like a Brown” Browns, well, ummmmm, played like Browns. And that “concept” of how to build a sustainable winner proved to be far from reality.

Ray Farmer and Mike Pettine have consistently defended themselves for building a roster devoid of playmaking talent. They don’t seem to care if they don’t score, as long as they’re able to block and rush the passer and defend.
