Confirmation Bias in the NFL: Connecting Predictions with Reality

If you were all aboard the Raiders hype train Sunday proved their potential. If you doubted Oakland, a one point win over New Orleans doesn’t impress you much. (Derick E. Hingle/USA TODAY Sports)

– Jim Bearor

Every team has played one game so far, and people think they have answers. It has been a long offseason of discussing narratives, who went where, and why it’s all going to come together for Team X this year. That’s totally cool, summer – the driest season for sports – is when the juiciest hot takes blossom. I think of it like a Quentin Tarantino movie, where the long dialogue scenes have more weight to them because you know it’s only a matter of time until the fight starts. Then when there is action, its significance is amplified. But in the NFL’s case, we talk so much and for so long that the events of the prior season get reduced to statistics, and the memories of it start to fade. Because of this, and for reasons beyond my comprehension, the first few games of the season have such a disproportionate effect on all of our opinions, even if we think we know better than to jump to conclusions. Giant Reactions to Week 1

– Jim Bearor

A 20-19 road win over the Cowboys was a solid start to the Ben McAdoo Era, all things considered. Terrance Williams’ poor decision that cost Dallas a chance at the end was huge, but it wasn’t everything. To me – and many other Giants fans, I assume – it felt like sweet poetic justice for Eli’s blunder at the end of this game last year. Continue reading

The NFC East: The Division That Makes No Sense

NFC East

(credit:insidethestar.com)

Jim Bearor

Over the past couple months, I’ve been ingesting more than the standard dosage of NFL, and the side effects seem relatively mild so I don’t plan on cutting back anytime soon. My mind is usually all over the place anyway, but lately I’ve caught myself making ridiculous connections between things totally unrelated to football, and whatever player, team, or situation could be analogous to the subject at hand. I’m zoning out in the middle of conversations and wondering if I’m crazy for thinking the Broncos won’t make the playoffs, or if my expectations are too high for this whole RGIII renaissance. I’m reading articles, sifting through stats, and listening to podcasts whenever I can afford to – and sometimes even when I can’t – but this is all stuff I can live with. Football is life right now, that’s just the way it is. There are teams and players I’m more familiar with than others, but for the most part, I feel like I’ve got a solid grasp of the league in its current standing. That being said, the longer I spend trying to wrap my head around the NFC East – the division my beloved Giants call home – the less confident I am in my understanding of it.
