Seven-Headed Monsters Don’t Exist

Rashad Jennings getting handoff

The New York Giants are bringing back the four running backs that made up a disappointing backfield in 2015. They ranked 18th in terms of rushing yards and were the team’s worst positional group according to Pro Football Focus. Andre Williams continued to frustrate everyone who had a rooting interest in him, but the other three had decent seasons. Jennings the starter, Vereen the third down back, and Darkwa the fill-in, all ran for a little over four yards per carry.

There was quite a bit going on at the position last year, but you can’t have too many running backs, right? Apparently that’s how the Giants saw it, seeing as they signed free agent Bobby Rainey and drafted Paul Perkins out of UCLA in the 5th round. Oh, and they recently added Marshaun Coprich, an undrafted rookie from Illinois St.  That makes seven. It’s only training camp, so the roster will be trimmed down before it’s all said and done, but there’s no denying the backfield feels crowded right now. Continue reading

McAdoo’s Giant Remix

Evolution, not revolution.

These words have been repeated often by Ben McAdoo since he took over for Tom Coughlin as head coach of the New York Giants in January. McAdoo isn’t Coughlin and he won’t try to be, but he’s made it clear in interview after interview that continuity is key.  All three coordinators are familiar faces. McAdoo’s beloved offense will probably return eight or nine starters. Hell, the clocks are still set to Coughlin Time — five minutes fast. Even so, there’s no denying times have changed. Big Blue had the oldest coach in the league last year, and now they have the second youngest.

This week on the podcast Evan Sally and Steve Stich were joined by guest host Jim Bearor. The guys talked about the Rams trading with the Titans for the #1 pick in the draft and if the Bills should think about potentially moving Tyrod Taylor and pick for the #2 pick.

The guys then talked Kobe’s incredible final game. Stich is a massive Kobe fan and shared his feelings watching him for the last time.  We compared the careers of Derek Jeter and Kobe.

We then took a look at the first round of the NBA playoffs. Which series stands out? Which team has the most to gain? And why don’t more people hate Golden State?

In Defense of Trusting Your Gut

As the NCAA Tournament proves every year, as long as randomness reigns there will always be a place in sports for trusting your gut feeling. Pictured: Darnell Harris of 15 seed Middle Tennessee during their win over #2 seed Michigan State. (Getty Images)

You’re watching sports with someone at the bar. They tell you that they have a feeling about what is going to happen next.  They don’t supply any real coherent explanation or data to support their prediction, they just have a hunch.

These kinds of hunches are frail and easily forgotten.  They don’t hold much weight in a serious conversation, because it always seems to come down to numbers and history.  Sport discussions work this way for good reason. Numbers only lie sometimes, and without them, you wouldn’t have any ammunition to put a delusional homer in his place. Of course, numbers and records do exist, and they’re more accessible than ever before.  The endgame of many sports arguments nowadays is a quick Google search to compare stats. If the bulk of information gathered says your hunch is wrong, you often kill it in your head before even mentioning it. Continue reading

Brock Osweiler and the New QB Landscape

By: Jim Bearor

I can’t get over Brock Osweiler’s deal with the Texans.  The numbers jumped off the screen when I first saw them, and a deeper look at the specifics only confirmed what I initially struggled to believe: Houston is paying a hell of a lot of money to have him as their franchise quarterback, and a lot of it is guaranteed.  I don’t have anything against Osweiler. I think he’s fun to watch because he’s massive and can throw things really far and hard, but I’m not at all convinced that he’s the guy to build a franchise around.  He’s a fifth year player who has started 7 games in his career, and now he’s making 18 million dollars a year. Toronto Raptors: Charged Up for Summer ’16

As we enter the final stretch of the NBA season, it’s time to separate the pretenders from the contenders. While Golden State seems to have a stranglehold on the league, teams like Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Cleveland and even the Clippers are also in contention. But there’s one more team that’s getting lost in the shuffle. Evan Sally and Jim Bearor had an email exchange about the forgotten contender, the Toronto Raptors. How will they fare in the playoffs and how will they fare against Cleveland?
