For The Mets, The Future Is Now

Mike Tolsma

November 1st, 2015. Mark that day down, as the New York Mets were still playing baseball. If I have said it once, I have probably said it 1,000 times – if you were to tell me the Mets would be playing baseball in November I would have laughed at you (probably hysterically). Who knew one trade (Cespedes), and a few young, blossoming stars (Syndergaard, D’Arnoud) would pave the way for a run all the way to the baseball seasons winding days. Terry Collin’s took the blame for Sunday nights 9th inning meltdown, and let’s face it – he was out-managed all series long by Ned Yost, of all people. Over the course of the past couple of seasons, one of the trends seems to be teams ending long playoff droughts. In 2013, the Pirates made the playoffs for the first time since a heart breaking championship series loss to the Braves in 1992. And in 2014, the Royals ended a 28-season drought, the second longest in baseball history, en route to a World Series loss. This season is more of the same. The Mets and Cubs are ending 8 and 6-season droughts respectively; this will be the Mets first playoff berth since blowing divisional leads to the Phillies in back-to-back seasons. And north of the border, the Toronto Blue Jays will be in the postseason for the first time since Joe Carter walked off the Phillies to win the World Series in 1993.   Continue reading

MLB Weekend Preview

Teams with something to prove:
With the renewal of spring comes a new baseball season, and for seam heads like myself, that brings about the happiest time of the year. With the excitement that comes with the new season, it can sometimes be hard to remember that every single game of the 162 game schedule has the same meaning. A stunning walk-off win, or a disappointing loss, count just as much in May as they do in August and September. With the excitement of pennant chases, sometimes it’s hard to think back to the four game sweep at the hands of a last place team that had no business even splitting the series. Early season games and series can often help to define a team, as well as show whether they’re contenders, or they just enjoyed a lucky April as they listlessly regress. With that being said, here are some teams with something to prove with the series they play this weekend.
